As a veteran, you have a strong need for safety and to feel grounded in security. It is a basic need of all veterans, but especially of those experiencing trauma and pain.

Do you have issues trusting others and believing that you can only rely on yourself? Do you have unstable relationships? Do you struggle with panic attacks or nightmares? Do you feel sluggish or have uncontrollable rage?

If you said yes, you may be experiencing a blocked root chakra, also known as the Muladhara chakra. According to ancient wisdom, the chakras are swirling circles of energy that align along the spine. They start with the root chakra which is the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first 3 vertebrae.

When this energy is blocked – or unhealed – it can cause many dangerous symptoms and side effects. Everything from depression to our sense of safety is tied to the root chakra. No matter how hard we try, none of our other energies can be healed or unblocked until we address the root chakra.

How Do Root Chakras Become Blocked?

Chances are, everyone faces a blockage or imbalance in their chakras at some point in their lives. Memories from ancestors who came long before us are stored in the Root chakra. Horrible things like war, trauma, and even the destruction of natural disasters are stored within our root chakras.

Traumas from your own past can cause an imbalance within your root chakra. If you suffered stress, PTSD, or trauma during your service, you likely have some issues with your root chakra. Sometimes these energies awaken from their dormancy without warning and begin to manifest in our bodies.

Physical symptoms of a blocked root chakra include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Sluggishness
  • Digestion problems
  • Left hip or leg pain

In a similar way, a blocked Root chakra can cause psychological symptoms like:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Rage
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicidal thoughts

Healing the Root Chakra

Veterans need the healing power of an unblocked Muladhara in their bodies. Without it, you will never feel the sense of safety you so desperately require. When you work to heal the root chakra and allow its energy to flow freely, you can feel safe, at home in this world, and fearless.

Physical and spiritual healing come together in the chakras. You can heal one without healing the other. It is our task to take charge of this healing and manifest balance and wholeness to our root chakra – no matter who caused the trauma that blocked it.

Here are a few ideas to get you started in the process of balancing and healing your Muladhara:

  • Exercise, especially stretches and strengthening for your lower back and pelvis
  • Foods such as dark red fruits and vegetables (tomato, strawberry, beets, etc)
  • Connecting with the earth by grounding yourself in nature. Take more walks, go barefoot, get outside.
  • Meditation. Your mind is a powerful tool for healing
  • Sound vibrations
  • Self-affirmations such as “I am safe.”
