Is one of your loved ones a veteran?

As a family member, you might be witnessing some of the problems that veterans face first-hand.

Veterans face increased rates of suicide, homelessness, unemployment, and substance abuse.

If your family member is going through any of those things, know that you are not alone.

There are steps you can to help the veteran you care about so much.

Check them out below.

Offer Your Ear

One of the best things you can do as an ally for your veteran is to really listen.

If you never served yourself, you aren’t going to be able to empathize with your veteran. And that’s okay.

You can always offer your sympathy, and show the veteran that you really care by just giving them a platform to talk about their life experience.

Encourage Them to Get Help

If your veteran appears to be in real need of professional support, encouraging them to get help can go a long way.

Contact your local Veterans Association and check out this mental health guide for family members from the U.S department of veterans affairs.

Sometimes, it’s okay to admit that you’re not okay. Remind your veterans of that fact, and encourage them to get help.

Spiritual Grounding

For every human being, veteran or otherwise, spiritual grounding is vital to our overall feeling of purpose and happiness.

Ascended Warrior is a 100% veteran-founded, veteran-pariticpant community dedicated to finding spiritual purpose in their lives.

You could encourage your veteran to check it out, or even sponsor a warrior that you love who might be experiencing financial hardship.

Spirituality is the key to purpose and understanding. Our program has helped many veterans in the past, and it could help yours too.

Recognize Your Own Limitations

Sometimes, the best thing for both you and your loved one is to know your limits.

You can’t give a veteran everything they need to heal, and that is okay.

By recognizing and communicating your limitations, you can improve communication between you and your loved one and produce a more meaningful and honest relationship.

If you’re veteran is struggling, consider these four ways you can help:

  • Offer Your Ear
  • Encourage Professional Support If Needed
  • Honor the Importance of Spirituality
  • Know your limitations
