Are you a veteran facing economic hardship? You are not alone.
2020 was a challenging year for everyone, and veterans were hit especially hard.
In 2021, economic hardships are expected to continue as the American economy seeks recovery from the massive recession induced by the coronavirus.
In this article, we’re taking you through 5 of the most prevalent economic challenges facing veterans this year.
Let’s take a look.
Unprepared for Civil Employment
Veterans returning to a healthy economy is challenging enough, and trying to find a job that fits veterans skills in an ailing economy is even more difficult.
Many veterans find themselves underqualified for high paying jobs and are forced to accept lower paying jobs that are unfulfilling and not a good fit for their skills.
Instead of building off the knowledge and skills gained by their years in the military, many veterans feel like they have to ‘start over’—which can prove to be a very painful experience.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Veterans have been left behind by the country that were sworn to protect.
In 2021, unaddressed mental health and substance abuse issues run rampant in the veteran community, with no end in sight in terms of federal attention and relief.
Veterans suffering from these ailments can find it very difficult to find, maintain, and enjoy their work. In many cases, this instability leads to homelessness and other life-altering problems.
Stigma For Hiring Veterans
Some employers are reluctant to hire veteran employees because of the stigma associated with military behavior.
In most cases, employers referred to mental health issues in the past, long gaps in employment history, and an unwillingness to hire those with a less-than-honorable discharge.
Because veterans don’t always follow a traditional path, it can be very difficult to appear to potential employers as equipped to take on the job.
Availability of Well-Paying Jobs
In 2020, many Americans took a hit on being able to find a good-paying job that matched their skills.
Many veterans in 2021 are set to struggle to find work that will pay them a living wage. Because so many veterans are relegated to minimum-wage work, they can tend not to feel valued or empowered by their work.
